About us

The Institute for Laser Technologies in Medicine and Metrology (ILM) at the University of Ulm is a non-profit foundation under civil law, dedicated since its establishment in 1985 to applied research in optics and photonics. Our interdisciplinary teams – combining physics, engineering, biology, and other fields – develop innovative solutions from concept to industrial application.

As part of the Innovation Alliance Baden-Württemberg (innBW), ILM is primarily funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg. Our focus is on practice-oriented technology transfer: our research is not only scientifically excellent but also aimed at enabling concrete applications.

We act as a bridge between science and industry. With expertise in:

  • Biomedical Optics
  • Optical Simulation and Microoptics
  • Optical Metrology and Sensor Technology

we provide customized solutions, supporting partners from feasibility studies to market-ready products. Another core aspect of our work is acquiring and implementing publicly funded research projects, which allows us to continuously advance our scientific excellence. Equipped with modern laboratories, extensive experience, and a broad partner network, ILM is a trusted partner for companies, research institutions, and public organizations working together on tomorrow’s technologies.

Departments

The ILM is structured into three departments with distinct areas of focus, working together to develop holistic solutions.

The Medical Devices department develops optical methods and systems for medical applications. Using advanced laser technology as well as thermal and high-speed imaging, we support partners from the initial idea through to first clinical use.

In the Quantitative Imaging and Sensing department, we research model-based approaches to optical imaging and sensing. Based on physical models of light propagation, we extract precise information directly from optical measurements – without relying on calibration or empirical reference data.

The Metrology department develops innovative optical methods for precise, non-contact data acquisition in industry, research, and environmental technology.
