Tissue Optics

The calculation of the light propagation in the tissue (tissue optics) is a necessary condition for the new development and for the optimization of a multitude of diagnostic and therapeutic applications. This requires both exact and efficient solutions

of the underlying equations as well as knowledge of the optical properties of the tissue types involved. Both are core competences of the ILM.

Examples of applications

  • Determination of vital parameters such as oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin, pulse, blood pressure or glucose
  • Determination of other tissue parameters such as water, fat and carotene content
  • Calculation of microscopic images such as those produced by optical coherence tomography (see picture)
  • Light dosimetry e.g. applied during photodynamic therapy
  • Optimization of therapeutic applications such as the coagulation of blood vessels (e.g. port-wine stains or telangiectasia) or the removal of tattoos
