Describe and understand propagation of light in scattering media

The optical characterisation of turbid materials such as biological tissue or plastics is a core competence of the ILM. Around a dozen measurement systems have been developed and set up, in particular for the determination of scattering and absorption coefficients.

Most of these measuring systems allow the determination of optical properties with spectrally resolved, from the ultraviolet to the visible and near-infrared wavelength range. In addition to integrating and point measurement systems, imaging setups have also been realized, see list below.

Exemplary measuring systems

  • Integrating sphere setup to determine the effective scattering and absorption coefficients
  • Collimated transmission measuring system for determining the extinction coefficient
  • Goniometer for characterizing the scattering function and the angle resolved reflection or transmission (BRDF) (see figure)
  • Model-based fringe projection for 2-dimensional determination of scattering and absorption coefficients
  • Spectrally and anglularly resolved scattering light microscope for characterizing single scatterers
  • Spatially resolved reflection to determine the scattering and absorption coefficients
  • Coherent backward scattering for characterization of highly scattering media
  • Time-resolved measurements especially for the characterization of deep layers of scattering media
