Via the understanding of light propagation in the scattering medium to calibration-free spectroscopy

In standard UV/VIS/NIR spectroscopy, one is faced with the problem that the light reflected from the medium under investigation is simultaneously influenced by - essentially - two physical effects, light scattering and absorption. Complex calibration procedures are therefore necessary to quantify the constituents. In recent years, methods have been developed at the ILM which, based on solutions of the radiative transfer equation, allow calibration-free VIS/NIR spectroscopy for the quantification of the constituents in turbid media. Recently, these methods have been translated into sensor technology suitable for industrial use, see figure.
