Measuring principle of photothermal measuring methods

The photothermal measuring methods are based on a time-modulated heating of a sample surface. The temperature gradient thus induced leads to a diffusion of heat in the sample and in the surrounding medium. The heat flow and the associated temperature distribution is influenced by the material properties heat conduction, density and specific heat capacity as well as by the composition and geometry of the sample.

Deviations from the geometry, variation of thermal parameters due to structural changes, defects or material inhomogeneities influence the heat flow and thus the temperature response to the periodic or pulsed excitation. These deviations can be measured by a time or phase-resolved measurement and thus be used for quality assurance in the sense of a 100% inspection.

The modulated radiation for heating the sample surface is projected onto the sample surface through a lens. The modulated thermal radiation caused by the heating is received by an IR-sensitive detector and evaluated phase-sensitively.
