Characterization of optical properties

The ILM has developed around a dozen measurement systems that enable the determination of optical parameters of liquid and solid turbid media. One major focus of the equipment is the separate determination of effective scattering and absorption coefficients. In addition,

apparatus for the measurement of the extinction coefficients, the scattering function and the refractive index were built. All measuring systems have been successfully validated by experiments on precisely characterized phantom media over a wide spectral range.

Examples of measurement systems developed at the ILM

  • Integrating sphere design, see figure
  • Collimated transmission measurement
  • Goniometer
  • Spatially resolved reflectance measurement
  • Coherent backward scattering
  • Fringe projection
  • Time-resolved remission and transmission measurements
