A standardised manufacturing process for phantom media has been established at the ILM over a period of more than ten years. The main focus here is on homogeneity and reproducibility of the optical properties within the material. This process ensures the high quality of the phantoms.

Production process for solid phantoms

  1. Well-characterised pre-dilutions  of the various scattering and absorbing substances are available. Some of these were homogenised as best as possible by adding dispersants. Homogeneity is ensured by mixing before partial extraction for a phantom.
  2. The individual components of the recipe are dosed by weighing and homogeneously distributed in a component of the matrix. A Hausschild speed mixer or an ultrasoniser is used for this purpose.
  3. After homogenisation, the second component is added and also homogeneously distributed. This is done under vacuum conditions to minimise air bubbles as far as possible.
  4. The homogeneous mixture is then filled into the casting moulds. Different moulds can be filled with the same material at the same time.
  5. The moulds can be exposed to a vacuum again as required to remove any remaining air bubbles.
  6. After curing, the phantoms can be demoulded and the material can be used to characterise the optical properties.
