Raw materials for phantom production

Various materials are available for the production of phantoms. Depending on whether they are liquid or solid phantoms and what other optical and physical properties are required (Phantomdesign), can be selected from a catalog of different materials.

Application examples

Matrix materials:

Silicone
- Pro: Long-term stability, flexible, 3D geometry possible,
Epoxy:
- Pro: Hard, machinable, polishable, 3D geometry possible
Gel Phantoms (gelled water/glycerine with agarose)
- Pro: Optical properties adapted to human tissue possible (water)
Liquid Phantoms (e.g. water or glycerine-based)
- Pro: Wetting of sensor surfaces (no air gap)
- Pro: Modifiable (addition of absorber)

Scatterer: Polysterol, TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3, ZnO particles

Different size distributions
Various spectrally dependent scattering/effective scattering coefficients
- Can be mixed to achieve desired characteristics
Various anisotropy factors possible

Absorbers: pigments and molecular absorbers

Absorption in different wavelength ranges
Can be combined to achieve a good broadband match with the desired absorption
Approx. 30 substances characterised

Fluorescent or phosphorescent additives

e.g. rhodamine / ICG
e.g. LED dyes
